We’ve all been told not to judge a book by its cover. But let’s face it, when you’re standing in the library with two books on the same topic, sometimes we go with the one that just feels like it’d be a little more interesting.
Your logo is your book cover. It is a recognizable symbol that represents your brand. It’s important that the emotions the logo evokes match up with the intended story.
Last night I was delivering final files of the logo and branding I did for a new client. She is a chef. Although how she responded got me a little confused, I was not sure whether she liked it or she just thinks it is okay. That is what happens a lot of times when you are working for a client who is sitting in another continent. Till the time you hear from them you just keep on thinking whether they would like it or not.
I have poured a lot of research, time and effort to bring something that I think can really help her to carve out the amazing brand image. The logo has been designed while forming a right strategy to portray a unique image to bring her strengths and uniqueness to the world.
The Text from Client:
I didn’t realize that it has been a few hours since I am constantly working on this. It is 10:30 pm in the clock and Just 15 minutes before I have sent her the logo. So, now I fiddled around the room, brought my dinner, and started watching a movie to kill some night time. Suddenly my phone vibrates and there is a notification. I have a new text when I looked at the clock it was almost an hour since I have been watching this movie.
When I looked at it, I saw that it is that client. A lot of thoughts started messing with my head.
What if she doesn’t like it?
What if she might have written that she hates it?
Or would like me to work on another logo?
Getting hold of my thoughts, I opened my phone being a little skeptical. It was shocking for me when I saw her text.
She responded with- “I ABSOLUTELY love the logo you created for me. How does it work, for me to be able to access and print?”
I haven’t sent her the logo files, open files, transparent png files that she can use. I just sent her was a presentation without revealing the logo right away. It happens with me every time I work on a new project. The anxiety, excitement, happiness, doubt everything. It is always the same, I think one can never get over it. That’s what makes it exciting, challenging and amazing.
Good storytelling is a great way to present:
Good storytelling is more than necessary to present your work. It is good to have a good build up, curiosity and excitement before you reveal the logo. It might also backfire if the final result is not as good as you are creating hype for it.
Your work needs to be remarkable otherwise they will feel that they have wasted all their time and effort going through such a long presentation. Their excitement now turns into resentment. So, you need to be a little careful and raise your standards when you send your client the final work. You need to ask more from yourself. Take the challenge of creating something remarkable every time you sit to do some work for your client.
We talked a little more and I told her that these are not final files.I asle let me work further to send you the final files that she can work on. She is way more excited than she seemed in her first response. I guess not every client starts to show her excitement with a bit of exaggeration and standing ovation. I shouldn’t always expect that.
The Payment:
Which designer doesn’t like to get paid, even if it has been years I still get very excited when I receive final payment. After all it the fruit of your hard work.
When I received the payment I was excited but It was shocking. I did receive the exact amount that we agreed upon but it came with a hefty tip. The reward in the form of her appreciation was great. I couldn’t ask for more but if it comes like this it couldn’t get any better. I love it when my clients are so happy and they think the work is much more valuable. When something happens without you expecting, it feels much sweeter, Isn’t it?
Deliver much more than what is expected of you and trust me you will get it back in tenfolds. Well! not exactly in the form of money but in a lot of ways like referrals, good image in the market, great appreciation and a lot of skill. When you ask a lot more from what the client has asked for you will grow a lot more. That too with a lot of ease because now you are doing all the hard work with a vision in mind.
So, hard work won’t feel as much excruciating as it is. It pays off.
I do not usually write about the experiences, my clients, and my work but I have planned to share my experience with you to entertain you, inspire you and there can always be a thing or two that you can take away to make yourself better.
And one last thing if you wish to be the first to see the logo, go follow me on social media and I will share it in the next few days. Due to a lot of client projects and my job I do not share a lot on social media that regularly. Although I am planning to manage my time well and share something every day
